DANVILLE — Macaroni and cheese, Hamburger Helper and homemade pizza. Ball State University junior Ross Hilleary of Danville knows a thing or two about membership in this exclusive grub club.
In fact, his cheap eats are a part of a bigger picture; Hilleary knows he has to stick to his food budget when it comes to paying for college.
“In the last three years, the thing that has probably brought on the most stress is the financial cost of college,” Hilleary said. “I would probably say it was … almost more stressful than going to school.”
The average student will walk away from college with about $22,000 in debt, according to non-profit organization The College Board.
For academic year 2007-2008 the National Center for Education Statistics reports the college price tag for full-time undergraduate students attending four-year colleges was close to $19,000. For two-year colleges, the price was more than $12,500.
The Illinois Student Assistance Commission reports college has become less affordable over time for Illinois students.

UPDATE: The Indiana Economic Development Corporation, together with Sallie Mae (NYSE: SLM) today announced that the company will consolidate operations in Indiana as part of its company-wide restructuring effort following recent federal legislation. The consolidation, which is in process, is creating approximately 350 new jobs at Sallie Mae’s existing facilities in Fishers and Muncie. The company’s announcement is the fifth major jobs announcement of the week for Central Indiana. (More information below the fold)
Original Post: In the fourth announcement of its kind this week, Governor Mitch Daniels joined executives from rail industry supplier Progress Rail Services today to announce the company’s plans to locate a locomotive manufacturing facility in Muncie. The facility will serve the diesel-electric locomotive market and position the company to participate in future transit rail projects. Progress Rail, which will operate the facility through a new subsidiary, anticipates this project could create up to 650 new jobs by 2012.
