Charitable criminal: Nonprofits commend Mericle's financial contributions

Real estate mogul Robert K. Mericle's public standing might have suffered from admissions that he made questionable payments to judges and politicians who advanced his development projects, but his reputation and his money are still good at local nonprofits.

Mericle, 48, continues to be an economic and philanthropic force as he awaits sentencing in connection with $2.1 million he paid two Luzerne County judges who lodged juveniles in for-profit detention centers built by his company.

At the Greater Wilkes-Barre Area YMCA, where Mericle is a longtime trustee and the swimming pool bears his family name, Mericle's involvement in the kids-for-cash scandal is beside the point, according to Director James Thomas.

"Everything he's ever done for the YMCA has been good for the community and kids," Thomas said. "I really don't care what those other things are.

"He's been someone who throughout the years always worked to help the Y serve more people and more families. He helped us accomplish things we would not have been able to do without his help."

Questions: Sallie Mae UK Education loan – I have taken out a loan ...

Sallie Mae UK Education loan – I have taken out a loan but now cannot get in contact wit them to start payment?

I have taken out a Sallie Mae Education loan but the UK company no longer exists, and the US company I am unable to contact about my loan.

I took out a Sallie Mae UK loan for my Masters degree between September 2007 and October 2008. I have done teacher training since then so have still been a student and they said in their writing that you didn’t have to pay it back while you are still a student. However I have not been abe to contact them at all either so they do not know I have continued to be a student. Without them knowing this my loan will be due to be paid back from August 09. I had a really good email from someone who told me that if they suddenly come calling asking me to cough up my debt that I would have reasonable grounds for telling them to f**k off and that the worst that can happen is that I will have an extended payment holiday until they get their arse in gear and try to get in contact with everyone who they lent money to, or if my debt has fallen into the cracks of the recent financial upheaval and they havent contacted me after 6 years then debt my debt is wiped. – any further advice or comment on this would e appreciated
