Savings: If you’ve saved for college, that’s great. But don’t exhaust all of your savings. Experts recommend families maintain a cash reserve that’s equal to six months of income. Those experts also caution against dipping into retirement savings to pay for college. And the recent housing market shows why we need to be careful with borrowing too much against home equity.
