If at all possible, don’t fall behind on your student loan payments. Being late could mean a late fee, some other penalty or possibly even a higher interest rate. Student loans stay with you until they are paid off; they can’t be discharged in bankruptcy. If you’re having trouble making payments, see if the student loan offers an extended payment plan or a forbearance (no payments for a while). Either of these solutions will cost you more over the life of the loan, but it may be necessary in the short term.
