This Ice Station Zebra weather has been really conducive to my work flow the past few days and J. Cole’s latest mix tape Friday Night Lights has been my sound track. Cole is a gifted story teller, weaving vivid tapestries of a young man struggling with all the perks, pressures and problems that come along with being at the tipping point of success. Tales of the dichotomy of being a college graduate from the ghetto and the adversity he has to face by walking that fine line is totally relatable and sometimes hits a little too close to home. The subject matter along with Cole’s powerful story telling ability provides an interesting and fresh perspective that I haven’t really seen on too many recent hip hop records.
Songs about dodging women who aspire to be professional “baby’s moms”; the dreaded Sallie Mae and the long arm of the Law round out this album quality mix tape. Many hip hop artists including Cole have expressed apprehension in releasing album quality material on a mix tape; which when you look at the quality of Friday Night Light’s is either an artistic lowball or a preview of true greatness.
