Investor sentiment for property investments is improving based on a survey of the asset allocation plans of 1,100 global pension schemes conducted by Mercer in April 2011. Although the increase in asset allocation has been relatively small, about two percent for domestic property and one percent in non-domestic property, when compared to the increase in allocations to domestic government bonds (14%) and alternative assets (12%), they nevertheless provide a positive trend for real estate investment in general.
“As a property person, it is encouraging to see both domestic and non-domestic property allocations are increasing. It’s increasing slightly, but that is still an increase, and we have seen the same trend in the past as well,” says Pertti Vanhanen, head of fund management – property at Aberdeen Asset Management.
In Europe, investors are currently losing money with inflation running as much as 3% while yields on government bonds are posting record lows. The 10-year German government bond, for example, hit an all-time low of 1.71% before recovering to about 1.78% on September 12.
